I always claim that studying the science of the environment is hard as hell. Yes it is hard! The Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Ecology, Statistics subjects I had were more than what I thought I could fathom. But the steps to caring for the environment are simpler that what most of us think. Or yes maybe we know they are simple yet we are not exerting even the slightest effort to protect our one earth.
I was watching The Correspondents last night. Ces Drilon was reporting on Manila's solid waste and the statistics is just unbelievable! Manila produces enough waste to fill the whole of Mall of Asia several times. (The issue on the Mall of Asia standing on a reclaimed area is also something I want to say something about but I'll leave that to future entries). The show has had countless documentaries on the different environmnetal issues we face today. So has Probe. So has Kapuso's I-Wtness. But, no matter how many documentaries the likes of Cez Drilon, Che Che Lazaro, Howie Severino, Kara David, Karen Davila make, if the viewers won't even budge a bit then those are useless. Those documentaries will gather awards and commends from different countries but those would mean nothing if Filipino viewers remain walang pake. But wait! How many of you actually watch these shows? After all, they are not the no-brainer The Simple Life that many girls enjoyed watching.
The recent Time and Newsweek cover stories are also about how polluted Asia is right now. But would you actually trade fashion magazine buys (or FHM for guys) with magazines richer in content?
Here we are at a time when information is readily available but we do nothing about it that often times we are left shrugging those important 411 off.
I do read Time, Newsweek and I super enjoy watching documentaries even if most people my age think they are boring. But, I am glad that I am aware. And I always take pride that awareness is the first step to participation.
But, when will most of us be more informed? When will we participate? When it is already too late?
What a shame...

Wow napakaseryoso ko naman. But yeah..I am serious. It makes me sad people comment on my more babaw entries than on entries where I am actually trying to say something!
Think people!! We are becoming more and more anthropocentric! And IT IS A SHAME!
