i get frustrated when people ask me what my major was and they give me that look "environmental science?ano yan?ano work niyo?" a family friend greeted me "hi basurera!" i shot him a piercing look and told him "i'm not going to give you anything if i get rich saving the earth"
sure, i am jobless. but these months have also been reflective. i realized that I DO want to work for the environment. I DO want to advance my knowledge. I DO want to pursue environmental law and management studies.
my course was an accidental scapegoat. it welcomed me when i i desperately wanted to escape physics, it was still science so i wasn't violating my contract with philippine science. but i never regret majoring in a course that i just chose to love instead of loving it first.
i do not live an eco-friendly lifestyle. that i know i'd eventually achieve when the right time comes. but it will be all too late if i prolong this non eco-friendly lifestyle i'm living. sure, i refuse to put my stuff in a plastic bag when i buy single pieces in convenience stores and i unplug the charger when my phone or ipod is fully charged, but that stops there..
coming home to tacloban doesn't help either. we get driven around and the car makes at least 4 trips a day from my dad's office to our home to wherever we are, we use the heater and we use way too much water in the shower, this computer is turned on the whole day, including the vonage and the modem so we can call my sisters almost everyday and worse! mana mila doesn't segregate. the simplest of all to achieve. i have reminded her many times and i only get this "para ano?" oh goooooooood!
yet again, i am at a point when i am brought back to the things i must do for the environment and the things i have promised to do but later forget. please realize that the issues on environmental protection, conservation, global warming need urgency on the part of every individual - you and me.
make a list of the things you can do.
- use less hot water
- use the aircon less
- commute once in a while
- use scratch papers
- use less tissue paper
- use a washable napkin when eating
- buy the new Levi's organic denim (hehe!)
- eat organic food (blech!)
- segregate
- buy less magazines and newspapers...look for online reads
- buy e-books instead of books
- print things that only needs to be printed
- schedule grocery trips so you know when to bring along your supermarket's greenbags (SM and rustans have these)
- don't smoke! (hoy!!! cig ban is nearing hon..hehe!)
- replace your incandecent bulbs with fluorescent ones
- use less hot water
- watch an inconvenient truth again (or watch it if you still haven't)
- plant a tree each year
- long term plan - buy a hybrid car
the list can go on and on depending on what you can and will be able to do. write them down and post the list in any place where you can see it to remind you whenever ms. forgetful pays you a visit. by writing this entry, i am reminded of my own to-do-for-my-earth list.
in simple ways, please do try to save our one earth. for your children's children's children's sake.
it'll be too late if we don't start now.
